Vengeance By The Foot

goodreads-badge-add-plus for awaken

This is a wicked fast read. Only takes around 10 minutes. I love the play on words Adam used in the title. You’ll get it when you read the story.

If you like stomach turning horror with your dark humor, you’ll like this one. Just a warning!

It’s a lot darker than other stories by Adam that I’ve read.

They used to be the happy couple. That is, until the infection.

Now he’s had to have his foot and part of his leg amputated and he’s turned into a bitter, self-pitying jerk. His wife can’t take it anymore and abandons ship.

He plies himself with booze and pills until he’s nearly unconscious. When something comes calling, he’s not sure if it’s real or a product of his indulgence.

Even though I was grossed out by some of this story, I found Adam’s writing to be stellar, again. He really knows how to stick it to you, with a twist or two for good measure!

I wasn’t kidding when I warned you about this one.

The Light Brothers have been very busy.

They’ve set up their own Q & A on Goodreads

Adam and Evans have been working on setting up a Goodreads Q&A group, which can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/8…

I’m thrilled to join this group. Goodreads is where I met Evans and Adam and discovered their awesome stories.

I’ve read many of their books and am making my way through all of them.

About Adam Light and where to find him.

I have spent the better part of my life in northeast Florida, but I was born in West Virginia. I was consumed at an early age by an unquenchable thirst for the written word. Words, in general, when I think about it.

I was a quiet bookish kid, but after moving down south I grew into a wild and rebellious teenager. I grew my hair long, became enthralled with heavy metal music, and all the rest.

I’ve mellowed somewhat, but I love life, I love my family, and I love to write stories. I have a mad passion for it.

I am proud of the stories I have written and sincerely hope that readers like myself have enjoyed reading them as much as , and plan to continue tapping away at this keyboard until my fingers won’t move anymore.

Thanks to everyone who has supported my madness so far; I look forward to sharing much more of my mind’s crazy ride with you.

Greg awakens with a sense of urgency. A quick glance at his clock confirms it. He’s overslept and it’ll be a mad dash to get to work on time. He forgoes breakfast, figuring he’ll grab a java at Starbucks and throws on the cleanest clothes he can find.

He spots one of his shoes but for the life of him, can’t find the other. Where is it? With no time to search any longer, he throws on a dirty pair of tennis shoes and heads out the door.

A quick glance at his living room gives him a sense that it’s different, empty somehow.

Traffic isn’t too bad until he gets close to Starbucks. Cars are lined up around the block. A huge SUV gives up its spot and he squeezes into line.

Crushing pain seizes his chest. Oh God, not a heart attack. As the pain subsides and leaves completely he has to give up his place in line or he’ll be late for work.

Just a few minutes late, he sneaks to his desk while no ones paying attention. Before he knows it, it’s time for lunch. How could that be?

Why the feelings of dread, the panic attacks, the missing time? What is it about today?

While not as polished as his later works, I still had a great time reading Gone, Adam’s first published book.

The suspense builds, you feel Greg’s confusion and panic, and then the twist is revealed.

Anyone who likes short stories with a feel of The Dark Side or The Twilight Zone will like this.

Free end of the world short story

Another great short and it’s free from Dec. 18th through Dec. 22nd. Get your free copy here.

Keep reading to find out how to get another free book by Adam!

THE CONTINUANCE AGENCY (The Continuance Saga Volume One)

The Continuance Saga: Volume One

The day the world ended, Daniel was sleeping.

In exchange for some game tickets from his father, Daniel is cleaning the basement. It’s not his idea of fun, but he can’t wait to see the look on his fiancee Colleen’s face when he shows her the tickets.

The only ventilation is from the door at the top of the stairs and it’s hot as an oven. The old sofa is calling his name and it’s surprisingly comfortable, lulling Daniel into a deep sleep.

Something wakes him up. Daniel hears a horrible racket coming from upstairs. It’s his mothers screams. He shakes off the cobwebs of his nap and rushes to help her and falls flat on his face. His legs aren’t working right. He tries it again and finally makes it up the stairs. What he sees is unimaginable.

His mother is kneeling over the body of his father on the kitchen floor. He’s gasping for air, his face is turning black and blood is leaking from his orifices.  Daniel hardly has time to grasp his father is dead before whatever it is takes his mother too.

What could kill so quickly? Could it be chemical weapons? When he first came into the kitchen, out of the corner of his eye he saw a black substance similar to oil withdrawing under the door and back into the vents. Was this what killed his parents?

Daniel doesn’t have time to think about that right now. He has to get to Colleen. He has to make sure she’s alright. She was supposed to be here already. But it’s too late. He finds what’s left of Colleen upstairs in his bedroom.

Now he’s alone. He doesn’t know how long it’s been since the black clouds containing the things came.

Then he receives the letter. The Continuance Agency has invited him to take shelter with them. Who are they? What do they really want? These are some of the questions Daniel asks himself. He is running low on water and supplies and needs to make a decision soon.

This story starts out deceptively normal. Then all hell breaks loose and you’re taken on a ride like a speeding train wreck. From the end of the world to The Continuance Agency at the end of the line, you’ll experience horror upon horror that gets your endorphins pumping.

Once the story takes off, the author doesn’t give you a chance to relax. It’s a short story after all, and he has lots to tell you.

Be careful at the end. It comes to a screeching halt with a heck of a cliffhanger. Adam better write fast. I need to know what happens next in The Continuance Saga. I need to know quick!

I gave this a FIVE. It’s a great beginning to the saga, had me hooked from the first few sentences, and never let me stop until I reached the end.

I just did a review of another short tale by Adam Light. You can read my review of Taken here.

Jack Harden is your average good-old-fashioned American truck driver. You can ask the girl he’s got duct-taped in the back of his cab, she’ll tell you. Oh, don’t worry – it’s okay. His wife knows all about it. She told him to do it.

It’s still free to download until Dec. 20th here.

A Thrilling Read and it’s Free

TAKEN

I am thrilled to get my hands on this! While I don’t normally use the blurbs for a book, this one is so good I have to share it with you!

Jack Harden is your average good-old-fashioned American truck driver. You can ask the girl he’s got duct-taped in the back of his cab, she’ll tell you. Oh, don’t worry – it’s okay. His wife knows all about it. She told him to do it.

Whoa. I bet that got your attention.

Jacks’s wired and tired. He’s on the last leg of an 18 hour burn and turn. Soon he’ll be with her. With his goddess. With Dianne.

“Dianne, Dianne. Oh sweet godd#mn Dianne.”

At first he didn’t think he could go through with it. He’s not the type. But if he wants to go home, he better have his cargo. Can’t go home without it.

She’s all wrapped up, well,  taped up, nice and tight. She won’t be getting away. What Dianne wants with her, he hasn’t a clue. But he’ll know soon enough.

What really got me was how nervous and bumbling Jack was when he snatched the girl. It had me on edge,  hoping he’d get away safely. I was actually on his side. You know the story’s good when you’re pulling for the bad guy.

As for the victim. Well, lets just say she’s not a wallflower. She’s got a mouth on her and plenty of bravado. Jack had better be careful with this one. She’s a kick-ass chick and her one liner, you’ll know it when you read it, is every bit as good as Arnold’s, ”I’ll be back.

I could picture the author chuckling in evil delight when he was writing Taken. It’s psychological horror that messes with your mind.

Can’t wait for you to meet Dianne.

A short, wicked good read.

Taken is free for everyone from Dec. 16th thru Dec. 20th. A  copy is waiting for you here.

Excellent choice for the cover art!

I just recently read and reviewed two of Evans books, Whatever Possessed You? and Crawl Space.  Loved them. They really creeped me out.

A strange encounter leaves Gerard Faust a changed man. Now with sanity slipping away, he finds himself caught in a race against time to uncover what happened that night – before it possesses him completely.

About the author

Evans Light has lived here and there across the United States, from the mountains to the beaches to the desert, and currently chooses to reside in a warm, southern state where the living is easy.

Frequently drawn to uncommon experiences, Evans has thrown himself headfirst into a wide range of unusual situations, from testing low-level-entry parachutes with British Army Airborne units to travelling the vast reaches of inner space using sensory deprivation tanks. He is the proud father of fine sons and the lucky husband of a beautiful wife.

Evans Light has been in love with the written word from an early age, and works in a wide variety of genres, including horror, thrillers, sci-fi and humor – but stories of the “Weird Tales” variety still remain his favorite. Evans is currently hard at work completing a collection of short stories entitled “Obsessive Deceptions”. Each story from this compilation is being released as a stand-alone title on Amazon as it is finished. The first five have been collected in the anthology “Stories, Inc.”.

Evans is also writing his first full-length novel, which is expected to be released sometime before his death.

Are you afraid of tight places?

Crawl Space by Evans Light

Tired of being nagged repeatedly by his wife, Tom finally gets around to spreading the lime underneath their old house.  He assures her that by the time she returns next week, he will have it finished and the house will be protected from moisture. After being used as a fall guy at work and losing his job, he really can’t afford to hire someone, so it’s up to him.

It’s a given that Tom is a jerk. A big one. That’s why he finds himself trapped under the house.  With his wife gone for the week and no neighbors in screaming distance, he’s in a heap of trouble.

Warning

If you’re claustrophobic this book will have you squirming.

Not a long book. Took me about an hour and a half to finish, minus some interruptions. But in that time, I was suffering from distress. I felt stuck, like the walls were closing in. Ever had tunnel vision? That’s how I felt. I could imagine how cold and dank it was. How dark and tight. Not to mention all the creepy crawlers under there. I hate spiders, ick!

Crawlspace freaked me out. If you like a story that makes you squirm, I recommend this one.

I just started reading another book by Evans, Whatever Possessed You? and it’s looking really good so far! It’s about…Wait, I’ll tell you about it in my next review, coming soon.

Short and Sweet?

I have great respect for authors who write short stories. Compressing so much detail into a quick, compelling story takes true talent.

L. Vera tells this story in a unique way, as personal diary entries, and I really enjoyed it. Well written and easy to follow, it is, literally, the diary of a madman.

The author’s choice of cover art is perfect. After all, it is a diary.

Todd Casil’s life is spiraling out of control. Experiencing episodes of missing time, he begins to question his own sanity when he discovers missing pages in his personal diary and entries he did not make. Who is killing the people around him, and why does he keep seeing green eyes?

Pulled into Todd’s life, I began to dread the conclusion that was racing towards me as I turned each page. You will too.

Also included are two bonus short stories.

I Hate Every Beautiful

This story will make you ask yourself whether you believe in coincidence or fate. The lives of 6 people are about to converge in a min-blowing final scene. The author knows how to wrap up an ending!

Cut

Henry awoke to find himself lying on the floor of his apartment. His attempt at suicide was a failure, just like his life.

An emergency broadcast on the TV warns everyone to stay indoors. Darkness has descended on the planet and there is something in it.

Now Henry must decided if he wants to live or die.

Open this book and prepare yourself for a gut-wrenching, edge of your seat buffet. L. Vera wastes no words, keeping these stories short and sweet. Well, maybe not sweet.

Review: What A Good Boy!

I really love reviewing short stories and collections. They are very challenging to review without giving away the content and that makes my brain pan hum.

It’s humming like a small engine right now,so let me tell ya about this story.

By page three I had an idea what was coming. By page 5 I did not want to keep going, but I read on.

One man tells his story.

Let’s face it, the marriage is over. George was the last straw. His wife hated him, said he had to go. But the man put his foot down.

George stayed and they divorced.

You see, George is his best friend, and they stick together. Nothing comes between them.

They move away and the man gets a new job. He likes his solitude and repairing roads in the desert suits him fine. Then it happens. While laying fresh cement, he falls into the concrete and is trapped. Good thing George came to work with him today.

Upon regaining consciousness, the man looks around, but no George. Must have gone for help.

George has been gone for a long time, but finally the man sees him. But where is the help?

George is running now, looming closer…

John Hansen tells a truly macabre tale. Even though I could guess what was going to happen pretty quickly, he still made it a nail-biting experience.

Man’s best friend is a very short, gruesome tale of friendship and loyalty. Perfect for those idle moments in your day.

You Will Peek Through Your Fingers

Sometimes I am lucky and discover stories that stay in mind for a long time. I thought of these two short stories by Shauna Klein while I was looking from some extreme horror to write about.  I will warn you that these stories contain extreme sex, violence and language.

First up is Peaceable Kingdom

Krista is not in a good mood.

She lost her job just because she refused to put down a dog. What’s with people anyway?

The little pug never asked for this. The owner just didn’t want to be bothered with her anymore and brought her in to be put down.

It went against all that is good to kill a dog for no reason other than that.

So it cost her a job. She’ll get another.

“It’s one thing if your pet is sick, but just because you’re tired of it is ridiculous.”

Krista raids the vet clinic for supplies to take care of the pug and to get the things she will need to spay Piper.

It was more difficult than she imagined, and very bloody. She closed up the incision and hoped for the best.

“I only want what’s best for you but you’ll forgive me if I screw a few things up, won’t you?”

This is a very short story with a Huge surprise ending. Extreme horror at its best.

Peaceable Kingdom left a lasting impression on me. The ending is a shocker and there is no way you can prepare for it.

Next up

It really happened. Zombies.

We’ve all read the books and seen the movies, but didn’t believe it would possibly happen. But it did.

Michelle wished she could go back to the mundane tasks of worrying about which bills to pay, grocery shopping and even cleaning the house. Instead she has to worry about how to avoid the zombies while scavenging for food and water.

And she has a bigger problem. Her husband Mike has cancer. Treatment didn’t work and now he is dying.

Bitter that she will be left all alone to try to survive, she comes up with what she thinks is a solution.

“All I have to do is get him bitten by one of them and he’ll stay with me for a while, maybe forever.” she thought.

Stop right there!

What is this woman thinking?

Who in their right mind would want a zombie for a husband?

This story is well written and thought out. A lot goes on in such a limited amount of pages.

The zombies are truly nasty and Shauna’s descriptions take you right to the scene, smelling the disgusting odors and seeing the rotting dead.

You’ll be squirming in your seat and looking away from the pages just like when you don’t want to see something in a movie. You know how you hold your hands over your eyes at a particularly scary or gruesome scene in a movie, peeking through your fingers to see if it is safe to watch again? That’s what I did with this book.

Make A Wish is a tale of desperation and a really bad idea. It leaves you wondering, what in the world was she thinking? Was she even thinking?

I enjoy reading short stories and appreciate how difficult it must be to get an idea across with a limited amount of words.

Take a bow Shauna Klein. You made me shudder, and that is no small thing for me!

I had the pleasure of reading a rough draft of Shaun’s next work in progress and can tell you that she has another twisted tale to shock and surprise you.
